The General Secretary of the New
Patriotic Party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, visited Tamale to empathize
with the families of the five NPP youth activists who were on Tuesday
sentenced to various prison terms, with one to die by hanging, by a jury
in a Tamale High Court.
He arrived in Tamale and was accompanied by the leadership of the NPP in the northern region to the homes of the activists.
Sir John, as he is popularly referred to, met with the family members of each of the incarcerated persons, and assured them of the support of the NPP and the legal route the party had taken to ensure that appeal against the sentences.
At Kanawu in Sabonjida, Mr. Afriyie assured the father of Yahuza Yakubu who was sentenced to death by hanging that the case was not over. He visited their families in Choggu, Aboabo and Sabonjida all in the Tamale metropolis.
Sir John also stated that he had spoken to various youth groups within the party, as well as supporters of the NPP in Tamale, as well as across the country, to remain calm and wait for the appeal process to begin.

“The NPP is a firm believer of the rule of law. Anything short of this will not be in resonance with the party’s belief. I am urging our members to remain calm,” Sir John said.
The NPP General Secretary revealed that he had been to the Tamale Central prisons to visit the 5 NPP activists and assured them of the party’s support.
Sir John also thanked the Prison Authorities at the Tamale Central Prisons for giving him the opportunity to visit the NPP activists and also thanked the Metropolitan Police Commander of Tamale, DSP Caesar Abanga for accompanying him in all his rounds and being present in meetings he had.
Mr. Afriyie reiterated the need for all NPP members to co-exist peacefully, as the nation waits anxiously for the Supreme Court ruling on the election petition on August 29.
