One of the aspirants for the General Secretary
position of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), Kwabena Agyapong, was on
Tuesday involved in a car accident on the Accra-Nsawam road.
The incident happened at about 1:30p.m., on the Nsawam bypass road near Npoaso.
Mr Agyepong and his entourage were on their way to Kumasi for a press conference as part of the campaign ahead of the NPP’s national delegates’ conference in Tamale on Saturday.
Nsawam Police
The Nsawam Motor Traffic and Transport Department Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Samuel Nposoh, told the Daily Graphic in a telephone interview that the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado which the aspirant and four others were occupying was mangled.
He said, the vehicle was suspected to have veered off the road and fallen into a ditch.
“The vehicle has since been recovered and towed to the Nsawam Police Station,” said Mr Nposoh.
According to him, when the police got to the scene, a good Samaritan had conveyed the victims in his car to a hospital in Accra.
“It was raining and l believe because of the slippery nature of the road the car veered off the road and went into a ditch.”
He said the police then tried to clear the road as the traffic was building up.
37 Military Hospital
When the Daily Graphic visited the 37 Military Hospital, where Mr Agyepong was receiving medical treatment, there were a number of people gathered following the breaking of the news.
Leading NPP members, including Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, Nana Ohene Ntow and Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, one of the contenders of the General Secretary position were also at the hospital to visit the victims.
Doctors and nurses who were busy attending to Mr Agyepong in the ANOFF VIP ward of the 37 Military Hospital had a hard time going about their business as the crowd kept increasing in front of the entrance to the ward.
Good condition
Professor Frimpong Boateng after visiting the aspirant on his sick bed told the Daily Graphic that Mr Agyepong was receiving treatment and that he was in a good condition.
He stated that even though the doctors had said Mr Agyepong might be on admission for a couple of days, it did not mean his name would be struck out of the race of the General Secretary contest.
“The doctors are doing further investigations to find out what to do. He is in a very good condition and his delegates can vote for him. The incident should not be blamed on his opponent or anybody,” he added.
Even though Mr Agyepong was said to have sustained minor injuries, a photographer who was among the other four in the vehicle was reported to have been in a critical condition at the same hospital.
The race
A contender and the incumbent General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, suspended his campaign in solidarity with Mr Agyepong.
He said he was on a campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region when he heard the news of Mr Agyepong's accident.
“I have decided to suspend immediately the rest of my campaign tour until further notice. I wish him and all those involved in the accident a speedy recovery.”
