Mr Osei-Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Minority Leader in Parliament has observed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would face disaster if it failed to win the 2016 general election to deliver good governance to the people of Ghana.
He said the current internal wrangling and character assassinations within the party in the quest for power was creating disunity and urged supporters and party faithfuls to be guided in their actions and utterances to promote unity for victory in 2016.
Mr Mensah-Bonsu who was addressing the party's National Delegates’ Congress in Tamale on Saturday said the NPP needed to wrest power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to ensure the survival of the country and claimed that Ghana had been mismanaged by the NDC for which reason they must be booted out.
Mr Mensah-Bonsu who is also the MP for Suame in the Ashanti Region said unity was the most paramount ingredient needed in the NPP now to enable it to galvanise more support from every member to ensure that many souls were won for a massive victory in 2016.
He alleged that there was gross mismanagement of the nation’s resources by the NDC while fuel prices was also being increased monthly, as well as water and electricity tariffs which kept soaring, adding that the rising public debt was worsening by the day.
He further alleged corrupt activities at the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) which, he said, were also killing the ordinary Ghanaian.
Mr Mensah-Bonsu urged the party to address its internal differences and work out strategies to win many floating voters to grant it victory.
He dismissed claims that MP’s of the party did not make any contributions towards the activities of the party explaining that each of the 123 MPs made monthly contributions towards the development of the party.
Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamtey, incumbent Chairman of the NPP said the party owed a depth of gratitude to some individuals in Tamale who contributed to the growth of the party some 60 years ago, and mentioned the contribution of Mr C.K.Tedam and S.D. Dombo, both founding fathers, amongst others.
He urged the party to unite and fight for success, noting that victory for the party in the next election was the most important objective.
He appealed to the government to name the new Tamale Sports Stadium build during the tenure of the NPP after the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama, former Vice President of the Republic, as a way of honouring the country’s dedicated leaders.
The Congress, which is on the theme: “Our roots, our strength, our future”, is expected to elect new executives to steer the affairs of the party for the next four years and is being attended by over 5,000 delegates.
Also in attendance are representatives of other political parties in the country including the NDC, PNC, CPP and the NDP.
