He emphasized that there is actually no ‘Big Six’ but rather a "Big One" – Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president.

He was speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on a brewing controversy over the roles played by some politicians in the struggle for Ghana’s independence in 1957. The debate was sparked by an essay presented by Prof. Mike Oquaye during the 21st anniversary celebration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) last week.

Press Statement From Samuel Awuku.

My attention has been drawn to a tape and transcript which purports to be statements I made at an undisclosed meeting which is circulating wildly on social media and with the potential of doing same in the electronic and print media.

I state very emphatically that the said tape and whatever by-products arising are totally fabricated and doctored and that I have never made the kinds of statements contained in the said tape anywhere. I know absolutely nothing about it and I would entreat the general public and the media to treat the supposed tape with the contempt it deserves.

In the event of a re-run will Afari-Gyan preside?

After eight months of bated breath, anxiety, legal wits and jargons, casting of innuendos, warnings, charges and convictions for criminal contempt, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Ghana will on Thursday 29th August, 2013, deliver its verdict on the presidential election petition brought by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and two others.

As we wait for the Judgment, it is clear to all that there can be only one of the following three possible outcomes namely;
  •  That the status quo remains. i.e. President Mahama is given the nod.
  •  That the First Petitioner, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is declared outright winner of the elections or
  • That neither of the litigating parties had the votes as required by law to be declared an outright winner and therefore a re-run or a run-off of the election must be held.

Leave Awuku alone!

As a developing nation, our challenges are enormous and our actions in addressing these challenges are limited. So the ordinary citizen wakes up in the morning wanting to hear things on the side of policy actors; measures initiated to mitigate our woes as a people who have journey through life over 50 years after independence.

And what do we hear every morning, doctored and fabricated tapes which serve as malicious intoxication to the ignorant in society. It is actually sad when such tapes are woven from the stables of key people who have the fiduciary role ameliorating the pains of the average Ghanaian on whose taxes they have fed fat.

Kumasi is ready for verdict – NPP MP

As the judgment day approaches, one city that is catching the attention of the local and international communities, perhaps, due to obvious political leaning of its majority, is Kumasi.

Noted as the ‘World Bank’ of the NPP, Kumasi has solidly stayed with the biggest opposition party, albeit, the recent increase in the presence of the NDC as manifested in the increase of votes cast in the favour of the NDC in the last general elections.

Akomea: All inclusive gov't will release political tension.

Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea has said ‘all inclusive’ governance could be made possible in Ghana’s democracy after the final verdict of the 2012 Election Petition if only the incumbent President, John Dramani Mahama is willing.

According to him, former President John Agyekum Kufour made such approach when he named some individuals in the opposition to join his government during his tenure in office.
He noted that there will be a need for a committee to be set up to deliberate the proposal (all inclusive) before implemented so as not to create mix-up.

The NPP bigwig opined that the call for an "all-inclusive" talks has been long overdue and believes it is time for such talks to be demonstrated even “if not after the verdict of the election petition” but years ahead.

There is in circulation, an allegedly leaked secret audio tape of Sammy Awuku, on which a male voice, purported to be that of Mr. Awuku, is heard telling some party communicators in the UK that the party’s “attacks” on the nine-member panel of the Supreme Court hearing the election petition case, have been “targeted at a particular individual".
The speaker is also heard confidently saying majority of the Justices hearing the case are favourable to the NPP's cause.
Among other things, the voice is also heard expressing fears that some of the nine Justices could be targeted for elimination before the verdict is delivered.

Dillish Mathews Wins Big Brother Africa. The Chase!

Namibia's Dillish Mathews wins Big Brother Africa, The Chase! The first time that a Namibian housemate won the continental reality TV show.
After expressing her desires to be the first woman to win the Big Brother grand prize since Zambia's Cherise did so seven seasons ago, Dillish has done it for all of Africa's women!
The gorgeous Namibian started her Chase race as the proverbial underdog and was labeled everything from lazy to a pampered princess. As the Chase rolled on however, Dillish quickly emerged as a very strong contender for the Chase title and won her fellow Housemates and Africa over, with her quirky, accented alter ego, aptly titled Princess Dillish.
The Namibian made sure to stay away from trouble and coasted through the Chase by taking her place behind the scenes. While her fellow housemates got themselves into hot water, fighting and gossiping their way to what they hoped was the top of the mountain, Dillish remained grounded and maintained cordial relations with her fellow housemates.
The only time the Namibian got herself in a spot of trouble was when she and her good friend, Nigeria's Melvin, had a disagreement after she told her fellow housemates about a relationship he was involved in, which was less than stellar. Dillish and Cleo proved to all and sundry that women are indeed a force of nature. The two hotties pipped their male counterparts, Elikem and Melvin to the top 2 while, as well as their close friend Beverly.

Shoot to kill: Family accuses police of brutal killing of breadwinner.

He woke up Tuesday morning, said goodbye to his family and left for work in his newly acquired KIA Price saloon car but that was the last time his family would see him alive.
That is the story of a 49-year-old tanker driver, Samuel Asabour, who was allegedly shot and killed by a police patrol team in broad day light on Tuesday, August 20, 2013.
On that fateful day the late Asabour, according accounts by the family, went to see a friend at Ashaiman but met his absence and so he left to work at Tema.
At about 8:30 that morning whilst driving to Tema, a police patrol team gave him a chase, suspecting him of driving a snatched car.
In the chase, the KIA Price skidded off the road and landed in a ditch about hundred meters from the Michel Camp on the Ashaiman-Tema road.According to an eye witness who narrowly escaped the vehicle, a red-eyed police man jumped out of a pick-up shouting ‘armed robber, armed robber,’ and despite being told by another policeman not to shoot, opened fire and shot the defenseless KIA driver who staggered out of his mangled vehicle and knelt down to beg the gun-wielding policeman to spare his life.

Single Spine should have been based on performance contracts - Minister

A Minister of State at the Presidency in charge of Public Sector Reform, Alhassan Azong, says the introduction of the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSSS) has failed to reflect positively on the level of productivity because all the key issues were not considered before the implementation started.
He says the level of remuneration should have been matched against results and not qualification as has been the case. That he said would have ensured that public sector workers are paid their real worth like in the private sector.
Mr. Azong was speaking in an interview said:
"I think that what the Single Sipne Pay Policy should have done was to do the pay vrs productivity indices and be able to say that if you are taking this amount of salary, then this is the productivity that is expected of you," he stated.
But this, according to him, did not happen.
He said there ought to also have been a system of performance contracts for supervisors to ensure that they demand tangible results from their subordinates.

Tens of thousands march in Washington to commemorate 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's iconic 'I have a dream speech'

Tens of thousands of people marched to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and down the National Mall on Saturday, commemorating the 50th anniversary of King's famous speech and pledging that his dream includes equality for gays, Latinos, the poor and the disabled.
The event was an homage to a generation of activists that endured fire hoses, police abuse and indignities to demand equality for African Americans. But there was a strong theme of unfinished business.
'This is not the time for nostalgic commemoration,' said Martin Luther King III, the oldest son of the slain civil rights leader.

80% of diseases caused by meat bacteria.

Mr Clement K. Humado, Minister of Food and Agriculture has noted that 80 per cent of diseases are caused by meat bacteria due to mishandling of the product by butchers.
He called on the Ministry of Health to collaborate with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) to help check the unhygienic handling and selling of meat in the markets and other places.
He said MOFA would meet with the Food and Drugs Authority to sign a Memorandum of Understanding so that agriculture officers in the districts are allowed to supplement their efforts in enforcing the food and drugs law.
Mr Humado made the observation on Thursday when he visited the Johnny’s Food and Meat Complex (J’FAMCO), which comprises an abattoir, cold store, warehouse and wholesale of agricultural commodities at Madina Estate in Accra.
He said checking of sanitation in the abattoirs and markets is the responsibility of the assemblies and called on the personnel to be up and doing and also ensure that they enforce bye-laws to stop people who use car tyres to singe animals.

Ghana will not fail; there will be no war - TB Joshua

Nigerian Prophet T.B Joshua has once again delivered another prophecy on events happening in Ghana, assuring Ghanaians and the world that Ghana will remain peaceful after the Supreme Court ruling on the election petition on Thursday August 29.

He says Ghana, noted for its respect for the rule of law and very rich democracy, will demonstrate once more to the world that it has strong institutions and will move on democratically after the court delivers its judgment on Thursday.

T.B Joshua, who was delivering a sermon on Sunday at his Synagogue church in Nigeria, said he has received many calls from people saying they are alarmed and would want to travel out of the country for fear of chaos after the court rules on the election petition verdict.

He said: “Ghanaians are people who set laws and obey their laws, nothing will happen, it will continue to remain peaceful; they will maintain their profile as a democratically peaceful country...sleep and close your eyes, Ghana will not fail”.

The 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo; his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and party Chairman, Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, are challenging the Electoral Commission’s (EC’s) declaration of President Mahama as the winner of the 2012 presidential election.

After 48 days of legal debates, the Supreme Court is due to deliver a judgment on Thursday August 29.

Supreme Court verdict, key to national stability,

Dr Lawrence Tetteh, an International Evangelist, at the weekend observed that the verdict of the Supreme Court on the election petition holds the key to national security, stability and unity.
“The judgment of the nine justices of the Supreme Court will let them stand out in the history of the country since it is going to be a landmark ruling, “he said.
Addressing an Annual Conference of Sheepfold Chapel in Accra as a Guest Speaker, Dr Tetteh said the names of the judges would be written in gold as people who stood stoically in the face of difficulty and delivered a judgment that united the nation.
He led intercessory prayers at the five-day conference being hosted by Bishop Gideon Titi Offei, General Overseer of the church, for the Lord to grant the judges wisdom, boldness and tenacity to declare the truth.
Dr Tetteh, who is also the President and Founder of the UK-based World Miracle Outreach, prayed that the judges should rise above personal interests whilst God should help them deliver a judgment that would be a reflection of his divine mind.

Nkrumah was an opportunist - Ayikoi Otoo.

Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Nii Ayikoi Otoo says he will personally spearhead a process to change the recognition bestowed on Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the Founder of Ghana.
He said the claim that Dr. Nkrumah foundered Ghana was a travesty and naked distortion of Ghana’s history which will be reversed when the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) regains power.
Mr. Ayikoi Otoo said Ghana’s first president was simply an opportunist who rode on the back of the hard work done by leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) to rise to national fame.
The forebears of the NPP foundered the UGCC and invited Dr. Nkrumah to take the position of Secretary but he later broke away from the party to found the Convention People’s Party which ushered Ghana into independence.
There has also been the debate that the Mills administration recognized Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as founder of Ghana - a position the NPP vehemently disagrees with.
Mr. Ayikoi Otoo maintained Nkrumah took advantage of the parameters set by UGCC for his Independence Now campaign.

Romanian King laid to rest in 'air conditioned' coffin.

Thousands of Roma turned out for the funeral of their self-styled King as he was laid to rest in his hometown in Transylvania today.
Florin Cioaba, 58, who had taken to wearing a king's crown as the leader of the minority community, became famous around the globe for arranging a marriage for his 12-year-old daughter.
After watching her storm out of the church to avoid becoming a child bride, 'King' Cioaba became an advocate for education for Roma girls and began preaching that girls should not marry before the age of 16.
This despite the fact that his dutiful daughter Ana-Maria had returned to the church moments later and was indeed married off to a 15-year-old boy of her father's choice.
Cioaba died of a heart attack while on holiday in Turkey last week, and received the sendoff worthy of a royal.
His body was carried in an air-conditioned glass covered coffin down a four mile route in Sibiu, Transylvania.
A banner emblazoned with his crowned visage was draped across an apartment building in his hometown. Stonemasons have been carving his tomb in black marble for the last week.

Danquah deserves no credit for name ‘Ghana’ – Kobby Acheampong

Former Deputy Interior Minister Kobby Acheampong says Dr. Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah deserves no praises for the name ‘Ghana’ which replaced the Gold Coast after the British colony gained independence in 1957.
Political historian, Prof. Mike Ocquaye, at a lecture on Friday, to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) – a progeny of the United Party (UP) – of which Dr. Danquah was a founding father, said “Danquah conceived the idea of calling the independent Gold Coast, ‘Ghana’”.
According to him, “this was formally adopted in Saltpond. It became known to every school child then that our nation would soon become independent; that our leaders were fighting for this; and the name of the new nation would be Ghana”.
The former NPP Presidential Aspirant and ex-Deputy Speaker used Danquah’s role in the renaming of the Gold Coast, to buttress his academic arguments that Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah couldn’t have been the sole founder of modern Ghana.

Power sharing will breed corruption – K.B Asante

Retired Diplomat K. B. Asante has said the calls for power-sharing will only breed corruption.
According to him, the calls of elimination of 'winner-takes-all' syndrome "sounds alright but it’s a recipe for disaster, a recipe for sharing corruption."
“I am not happy at all about this sharing power. Eventually you share corruption, that is not what we want, '' he noted.
His concerns come on the back of calls by Chairman of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Kwabena Adjei and members of the public that political parties do away with the winner takes all syndrome.
Mr. K.B Asante said political parties are there because they have different solutions to the problems of the country.“Let those who have one set of opinion get to one side, but if we are having a unity government it should be for a purpose.''
''Let the parties have definite policies, they should all have a plan’’; he said Ghana is getting polarized because the mindset is ''not correct and we have nothing to think about''.

Akufo-Addo, Mahama really committed to peace – Dr Abu Sakara

Dr. Abu Sakara, Presidential candidate of the Convection People’s Party (CPP), has expressed confidence in President John Dramani Mahama as well as the 2012 Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating categorically that the two leaders are readily committed to maintaining the peace of the country.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Gold, the CPP flagbearer noted that Nana Addo and the President have both tasted the bitter and sweet moments of the nation and would prefer to have their names registered in the country’s history books for good reasons.

To him, both Nana Addo and President Mahama “are people who are deeply committed to the rule of law and democracy in this country. They, themselves, have cited incidences in the past where they have been champions. So…it is not now that they will deny the ultimate rule of the game which is to accept the law of the land as determined by the Supreme Court who are the competent people to determine what is justice.”

PAC warns BoG Governor over continuous boycott of sittings.

Chairman of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Kwaku Agyeman Manu, has cautioned Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Henry Kofi Wampah over his continuous boycott of the committee's sittings.
The PAC Chairman announced during sitting on Friday that the Governor was pushing the Committee to go against certain conventions it has adopted over the years.
The Committee wants the Governor to answer questions regarding inconsistencies in a loan agreement between the central bank and Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) which was revealed in the Auditor General’s 2011 report.
The Auditor General's report noted authorities at the country's central bank were operating against its own governing Acts and Regulations relating to contracts it signed with Ghana Commercial Bank.
Joy News' Parliamentary Correspondent, Elton John Brobbey, said the Auditor General's report indicated that on February 19, 2009 the Bank of Ghana under a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU)granted a $25 million and $50 million loan facility to Ghana Commercial Bank.

Samia: My father founded Ghana, period!

The Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Samia Nkrumah has insisted that her father, Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah is the original founder of modern day Ghana.
She, however, conceded that some other individuals played roles in the eventual liberation of Ghana from colonial rule.
The former lawmaker’s comment was in reaction to assertions by former presidential candidate of the main opposition NPP Prof Mike Ocquye that forebears of the NPP deserved better credit for the founding of Ghana.
According to Prof Ocquaye, people like J.B Dankquah and other members of the UGCC were the main brains behind the founding of modern day Ghana.
He disagreed with claims that only Dr. Kwame Nkrumah deserves credit for Ghana's founding.
