The University for Development Studies (UDS) branch of the Tertiary
Education Institutions Network (TEIN) of the National Democratic
Congress (NDC), has recommended that the Former President, Dr Jerry John
Rawlings, be appointed Chancellor of UDS.
A congratulatory statement signed by Presidents of TEIN in Tamale,
Nyankpala, Navrongo and Wa campuses of the University, and copied to the
Ghana News Agency in Tamale on Wednesday said Dr Rawlings deserved more
than the honorary doctorate degree conferred on him by the UDS last
Saturday.
The statement, however, commended the University Council for
recognizing and showing appreciation for the good work of Dr Rawlings.
It described him as a visionary leader who, despite the odds, made
the right decision by establishing the UDS to train the country’s human
resource and more particularly to promote higher education in northern
Ghana.
The statement recounted Dr Rawlings’ contribution to the
establishment of UDS, saying “In 1993 he donated a 50, 000.00 US dollars
African Prize for the Sustainable End of Hunger Award he won to the
UDS.”
It said, “We as students of UDS acknowledge the humanitarian gesture
by Former President Rawlings and wish to congratulate him for the
hard-earned and deserving award from the Council of the UDS.”
