National Democratic Congress congratulates Rawlings.

 

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has extended its congratulation to the party’s founder and a former President of Ghana, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, on being awarded by the University for Development Studies (UDS).

The authorities of the UDS on Saturday honoured former President Rawlings with an honorary Doctorate Degree for establishing the University about 20 years ago.

Former President Rawlings, as part of his desire to expand university education in the country, willingly donated US$50,000 award cash from the Hunger Project to help start the UDS during his tenure as President.

According to a statement signed by the General Secretary of the party, it said that “the NDC sees this award as recognition of your selflessness and commitment to ensuring that more Ghanaians are equipped with requisite skills through education to meet the human resource needs of the country. We also see this honour as a recognition of your consistent and priceless role in poverty alleviation, economic and political emancipation in Ghana.”

Indeed, the NDC described the efforts of President Rawlings as promoting education to an appreciable level which yielded the required results as evidenced in the establishment of more schools at all levels in the country’s educational landscape.

This pedigree, which has attracted recognition both at home and abroad, will forever remain indelible in the annals of our beloved Ghana, the statement added.

“We wish to reiterate that the feat achieved by the party’s founder emanates from his belief that education holds the key to the development of society and this stems from his determination to pursue justice and equality for the liberation of the ordinary man,’ it stated.

The NDC said that it was of the opinion that ‘‘this honour, like others conferred on you by international universities, would continue to serve as a source of motivation and inspiration to the Nation. No wonder, the UDS authorities have rightly decided to build a monument in your honour at the Nyankpala Campus where the university’s foundation stone was laid.”
