The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu
Afriyie, says the allegations made by Victoria Hammah on a leaked tape
which suggested that Justices of the Supreme Court were influenced by
the presidency before their final verdict on the election petition will
continue to haunt President John Mahama and the National Democratic
Congress (NDC).
This follows the dismissal of a petition by Mr. Owusu Afriyie to the Chief Justice, requesting investigations into Ms Hammah’s allegations.
After two weeks of investigations, the committee which was set up by the Chief Justice to investigate the matter dismissed the petition for lack of evidence to substantiate the claims.
Mr. Owusu Afriyie, however, indicated he was satisfied with the work of the committee but was quick to express his reservations concerning the non-appearance of Ms Hammah before the committee.
According to him, the former Deputy Communications Minister’s refusal to appear before the Committee will never make the issue “go away. It will stay and it will continue to haunt John Mahama and the NDC, it is never going to go away.”
He maintained that until Ms Hammah personally denies the comments, the matter can never be swept under the carpet, saying; “since she made those serious allegations, till date I have not heard her retract those words or even apologize to Nana Oye Lithur, for me the matter remains as active and alive as the day we first heard it on radio. There is nothing that can wash it away.”
Mr. Owusu Afriyie has since tasked the media to unearth the reasons why Victoria Hammah refused to appear before the committee.
“I wish that the press; you will continue to haunt her and go and find out where she is hiding and refused to appear before the committee. This is a very serious matter, a grave matter like that. Is it the national security? Is it John Mahama? Or who did advise her not to come. It seems to me that she would have known that she could not be compelled to come.”
Meanwhile, a member of the legal team of the NDC in the election petition case, Abraham Amaliba, has rubbished the comments by Mr. Owusu Afriyie.
According to him, the NDC and the President won the case due to “the hard work we put before our Justices, arguments that were so compelling that the Supreme Court could do nothing but to declare in favour of the NDC and the President.”
“We are unaware of any external factors that gave the verdict to the NDC and the President, and so we are clear in our minds that there hasn’t been any influence whatsoever from any quarters and so there is nothing to haunt us,” he added.
