Government
has cut down the number of GETFund scholarships it gives out yearly
because it is unable to pay the fees of Ghanaian students studying
abroad due to the current economic challenges.
The Ghana
Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has been struggling to pay the allowances
and fees of students on government scholarships in various countries
for 2013, with students calling into radio stations to complain.
According
to Deputy Minister for Education,Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who confirmed
this to Citi News government is working to pay outstanding debts owed by
the current beneficiaries immediately.
He however denied that the scholarship scheme has been cancelled.
"It
is the GETFund scholarship, that i must admit that this year because of
the pressure on the economy, the number of students that went out on
GETFund scholarship does not compare to those who went out last year and
two years ago. But it is not accurate to say that the GETFund
scholarship has been cancelled.”
"There was a backlog of arrears,
which has to be cleared based on students, who were agitating because
they had not received their tuition fees. So our priority this year was
to clear the backlog," he explained. |
