I’ll do everything to stop Konadu - Pratt

Mr Kwesi Pratt, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper has vowed to do everything in his power to ensure Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings never becomes president of Ghana.

Admitting he is just a common journalist and has no power though, Mr Pratt said he is prepared to do anything he can to ensure the former first lady does not become president.

He was speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Friday, in reaction to reports suggesting that Mrs Rawlings has formally indicated her interest in contesting President Mills come 2012.

Explaining his position, Kwesi Pratt said he knew Nana Konadu’s past and her way of doing things – recalling the era of Mrs Rawlings as First Lady and some events that occurred around her, including the famous Selassie Djentuh and the ‘identification haircut’.

“Masa, y?mmp? s? y?b? bre y?n kuro mu, Ghanafuo bebree w?h? a w?n abr?, nne?ma a ?mo afa mu ne ade?..., to wit: We don’t want to bring back old memories because Ghanaians want to forget what they've been through.

“S? y?b?tena Ghana ha paa ma Obaa Konadu ab?di omanpayin wo ha de?a, adabraka, ?nnsi.” [We will never sit and watch Konadu to become president, it will never happen.]

Again, Kwesi Pratt said he was threatened by thugs working for the former first lady because he criticised her and questioned whether Konadu was going to rule by the mob and employ such old tricks of threats and intimidation when she is given the nod to rule Ghanaians.

Pratt wondered if she wants to be president with that character, questioning if anyone in the land will have peace and comfort.

Kwesi Pratt further explained that he believes Konadu’s quest to ascend to the presidency is not based on claims that Mills is underperforming. This, according to him, is because ex-president Rawlings started his harsh criticisms of the president barely two months into his administration.

He reminded Nana Konadu that even if she wins the flagbearership position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – a situation Pratt views as very unlikely to happen – she would have to depend on the achievements of the Mills-Mahama administration to succeed.

He added that Konadu, by her quest for power, is courting disaster which is neither in her own interest nor that of the party and urged all who love the former first lady to give her a sound advice since she is going to be disgraced should she carry on with her desire.

She won’t even get 10 per cent, he assured, adding that Konadu’s quest for power “… is based on an empty ambition.”

“It has no relevance to our development, no relevance to anything…” Pratt insisted.

On ex-president Rawlings and his incessant criticism of the Mills-administration, Mr Pratt said “Most of it is not true, most of it is not worth considering, whether it’s about NPP, whether it’s about NDC.”

He also took a swipe at the members of the NDC; especially the leadership who he said are being hypocritical in handling issues concerning the Rawlingses.

Kwesi Pratt said the Daily Guide story about Mrs Rawlings’ declaration to contest the NDC's flag-bearership was true yet the party was denying it. “In fact the meeting took place at Madina- Social Welfare…they know for a fact” that she informed the Council of Elders she was going to contest.

“What is this, what is this kind of life? Politics which is not based on principle. Politics which is not based on truth. “I’m getting fed up with this,” he added.
