Clint Dempsey led the US Men’s National Soccer team to a huge defeat against Ghana during the World Cup — and it was the first time the US have eliminated Ghana in three World Cups! The team accepted the ESPY Award for Best Moment of the year, and thanked the fans more than anyone else!
ESPY Awards 2014 Best Moment
“We just wanted to say its an honor to win this award with all the
other players that are in this category,” Clint said when winning Best
Moment on July 16 — exactly a month after the game that landed him
there. “We appreciate the fans that voted for us, and also the fans who
hunted us down when we were in Brazil for the World.”
Clint, along with the rest of the team, also shouted out to all the
fans that gathered in bars and that “showed how far the game has come.”
In case you missed the game, in the first 30 seconds, Clint scored
the first goal. It was the fifth fastest goal in the history of the
World Cup! With that, he became the first American player to score in
three World Cups. Then, with eight minutes left of the game, Ghana’s Andre Ayew came back to tie it all. But it wasn’t over. With four minutes left, John Brooks scored the game winning goal.
Just so you know, Ghana eliminated US in the last two World Cups, beating them 2-1. This time, it was the other way around.
We’re so happy to see the U.S. mens soccer team get the win for best moment of the year at the 2014 ESPYs!
