Extraordinary scenes in Rome as more than 250,000 pilgrims pack St Peter's Square for Francis' first Easter.

Pope Francis used his first Easter Sunday address to call for peace in the world and appealed for a diplomatic solution to the crisis on the Korean peninsula.
In his first 'Urbi et Orbi' - to the city and the world - message, Francis also called for peace between Israelis and Palestinians, an end to the civil war in Syria, and political solutions to conflicts in several African countries.
The former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, who has made defence of nature an early hallmark of his pontificate, also condemned the 'iniquitous exploitation of natural resources' and urged everyone to be 'guardians' of creation.

Nelson Mandela hospitalized with Lung Infection

Former President Nelson Mandela of South Africa was readmitted to the hospital overnight because of a recurring lung infection, President Jacob Zuma said in a statement on Thursday, appealing to people around the world to pray for Mr. Mandela.

It was the third time in four months that Mr. Mandela, 94, South Africa’s first black president and former leader of the dominant African National Congress, had been hospitalized. He was admitted shortly before midnight on Wednesday, the statement said, but the authorities delayed the announcement for several hours. The episode rekindled worries about his frailty.
Mr. Mandela spent 19 days in December hospitalized for a lung infection and what government officials described as the surgical removal of gallstones. He was readmitted earlier this month for what was termed a scheduled checkup.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs tops Forbes' list of wealthiest hip-hop artists.

It’s all about the Benjamins, baby,” Sean “Diddy” Combs proclaimed in 1997 on his debut album, back when he was known as Puff Daddy. He rapped about wanting to be a “shot-caller,” and, well, now he definitely has enough Benjamins to call the shots. Today Forbes reported who the world’s five wealthiest hip-hop artists are, and Combs topped the list with an estimated net worth of $580 million. The rapper-actor-producer-entrepreneur also was number one on the list last year, when his net worth was a reported $550 million.

Read on to see who else rounds out the list:

The End of the Google Reader

Google has announced on their Official Google Blog that they are planning on shutting down their Google Reader. Much to the chagrin of many loyal users of product, Google Reader will officially come to an end on July 1, 2013.  The company has indicated that the announcement was made with the intention of providing users with enough time in order to find an alternative reading solution.

Google Reader was first launched in 2005.  For those who perhaps aren’t that familiar with the feed-reading service, the news may not sound spectacularly earth shattering. However, the product has an extremely loyal following. Google Reader made it easy for people to follow multiple news sources at one time. But, according to Google, despite the devoted following, usage has declined over the years. In a statement by Alan Green, a software engineer with Google, the reason for the decision to bring Google Reader to an end is so that Google can focus on fewer products.  Essentially, the company has decided to devote more resources and energy to fewer projects, rather than to continue to devote resources to a product with a declining user base.

The President's Assignment (The people's Stealing our power)

Google Maps chief Jeff Huber steps down to join Google X

Jeff Huber, the man who has run Google's Mapping and Commerce group for the last decade, has stepped down. In the process, his team is being split in two, and he's moving over to Google X, the search company's skunkworks charged with bringing bleeding-edge technologies -- everything from space ladders to driverless cars -- to life.
The move comes just a day after Andy Rubin, the senior vice president who spent that last decade at Google running Android, also stepped down to work on covert projects at Google X.
"Jeff is an extraordinary executive. He just finished his first decade at Google -- having worked on some of our most complicated issues like ads, apps, payments and geo -- and now he is eager to work in more of a startup environment," a Google spokesperson told Wired.com in an email. With Huber no longer at the helm, Mapping will now fall under Google's Search division, run by Senior Vice President Alan Eustace. Commerce will roll into Google's Advertising group, run by SVP Susan Wojcicki.

Huber updated his Twitter bio on Thursday, confirming his move to the X team. On Thursday, in his first tweet since 19 December, Huber asked what his followers would like to see Google X pursue. "Finishing up my first decade at Google, and excited to begin the next one at Google X. What would you like to see X do next?" he wrote.

We have a new Pope! White smoke finally appears over Sistine Chapel after cardinals decide the new Pontiff

A new Pope was elected this afternoon after white smoke poured out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City signalling the election of a Pontiff to lead the Catholic Church.
Tens of thousands cheered in St. Paul's Square at the sight of the symbolic plumes, announcing that a successor to Benedict XVI had finally been chosen after two days of intense voting.
After hours braving the cold rain, the huge crowd chanted 'Habemus Papam' and 'We have a pope' - as the bells of St. Peter's Basilica and other churches across Rome pealed.
The new Pope is expected to appear on the balcony of the Basilica within an hour, after a church official announced the decision to cardinals.

Cardinal Peter Turkson: Conservatism's Cape crusader

Is the world ready for a black Pope? Many would say it has been ready for so long that it is growing a little impatient. Cardinal Peter Turkson, of Ghana, is in no doubt. "Why not? We've had Kofi Annan as Secretary General of the United Nations... he had his problems, but he did it. Now we have Obama in the United States. So if, by divine providence, God would wish to have a black man as pope, I say thanks be to God!"

That was Turkson back in 2009, during a Vatican press conference.

And now, after the resignation of Benedict XVI, he has no trouble seeing himself in the frame. Shows of diffidence and modesty are the standard reactions to questions of this sort (though, with hindsight, Benedict's disclaimers back in 2005 seem to have been only too sincere), but that is not the Ghanaian's style. "It would certainly mean a lot if I had to be pope," he mused this week. "If I was elected pope it would signal a lot of [personal] change, very big change in a lot of regards... It is going to be a life-changing experience, and I think that is what it has been for Benedict and those who have gone before us. The challenge will also be with the individual to want to make his mark, not trying to fit into anybody's shoes but finding his own shoes to wear."

'No pope!' Cardinals send black smoke signal from Sistine Chapel to show first day of conclave has ended without a new pontiff

Black smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel tonight to signal that the first day of the conclave to elect a new pope has ended without a decision.
Earlier today 115 cardinals were locked behind the heavy wooden door to start discussions for the successor to Benedict XVI following his shock resignation.
But as darkness fell, the dark smoke plumed into the sky over the Vatican in a sign that talks had ended without a decision.
Benedict's resignation has thrown the church into turmoil and exposed deep divisions among cardinals grappling with whether to pick a manager who can clean up the Vatican bureaucracy or a pastor who can inspire Catholics at a time of crisis.
The 115 red-hatted and red-caped cardinals earlier chanted and prayed for divine guidance as they prepared for a conclave to choose a pontiff who will face one of the most difficult periods in the Church's history

Barcelona 4 AC Milan 0 (4-2 on aggregate)

The word of the night was remontada. It means comeback. And this was the madre of all remontadas. If there was any doubt about the team to beat in this season’s Champions League, Barcelona reconfirmed the identity of Europe’s most potent force.
Both a club and a player. We are watching a genius, you do know that, don’t you? In Lionel Messi, Barcelona have a player as great as any to have walked the earth. Up there with Pele, with Diego  Maradona, with Johan Cruyff or Zinedine Zidane.
It no longer matters that he has the good fortune to play in a magnificent team. What he does on nights like this transcends such petty quibbles. These were his 52nd and 53rd goals of the season. It is simply untrue to suggest that any player of talent would score them, surrounded by these exceptional team-mates.
