Troubled singer Amy Winehouse, whose struggle with drink and drugs overshadowed her sultry musical talents, has been found dead at her flat in north London, emergency services said.
She was 27. Winehouse rocketed to fame after winning five Grammy awards off the back of her 2006 second album "Back to Black" and the hit single "Rehab". The singer had a European comeback tour schedule but pulled out following a disastrous opening performance in Serbia on June 18. In the run-up to her live return,
Winehouse spent a week at an
addiction treatment clinic in London, reportedly at the suggestion of her father, Mitch, over concerns that she
was drinking too much. But she was booed at the opening
performance in Belgrade, apparently too drunk to sing. Some 20,000 people gathered for the highly-promoted concert at the sixth-century Kalemegdan fortress, but many soon left.
During the 90-minute concert,
Winehouse could only mumble some of the lyrics, failing to follow her band. She left the stage twice, with many fans showing their displeasure despite her band's attempts to calm the crowd.
"Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances," a statement from her representatives said. "Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen." She had also been scheduled to perform in Istanbul, Athens, Bilbao in Spain, Locarno in Switzerland, Italy's Lucca festival, Switzerland's Paleo Festival in Nyon, Nova Jazz and Blues Night in Wiesen, Austria, and Poland's Bydgoszcz Artpop Festival.
She made her final public appearance at The Roundhouse venue in Camden on Wednesday, joining her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield on stage. She danced with Bromfield and ecouraged the audience to buy the youngster's album before leaving. Known for her distinctive voice and beehive hairstyle, Winehouse's debut
album "Frank" was released in 2003 and brought her wide acclaim. It went triple platinum in Britain. The follow-up, "Back to Black", was a worldwide smash hit, reaching number one in Britain and number two in the US charts.
It went six times platinum in Britain and double platinum in the United States. She married Blake Fielder-Civil in Miami in May 2007 but they had a tempestuous relationship. He spent part of their marriage behind bars for a vicious attack on a pub landlord and a
subsequent attempt to cover it up. They divorced in July 2009.
Fielder-Civil, 29, was jailed again for 32 months in June for carrying out a domestic burglary with an accomplice "while in the grip of heroin addiction"

English sideSunderland partnerwith Ghana’s AsanteKotoko
The Porcupine Warriors are
expected to benefit in many areas
from the deal with the Black Cats
while the Ghanaians have been
tasked to promote the club in Africa According to the Wearsiders, the spirit of the pact allows them to share coaching and business expertise with the Porcupine Warriors, offer practical
support and advice in youth
coaching, player development, fitness and medical matters, as well as football business strategy. “Kotoko in turn will work closely with Sunderland to help the club build and grow its brand in the emerging African territory,” the club’s official website added.
The announcement is coming on the heels of an April visit of Kotoko
officials to the Stadium of Light, where the Ghanaian delegation toured the Black Cats’ facilities and met with the management. "It was a huge honour to welcome theKotoko officials to our club and I'm delighted that we have now
formalised a partnership agreement with them,” Sunderland chairman Niall
Quinn stated. "There's a tremendous passion for
football in Ghana and I see a real
synergy with Sunderland in that
respect - football means the world to the people of Ghana and in that
respect they are no different to Sunderland fans. There's an infectious enthusiasm for the game that is wonderful to witness and we are honoured to be working with Kotoko and the Ghanaian people." In the past season Ghanaian trio, John Mensah, Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan played for Sunderland, but only the latter remains at the club, since the other two left at the end of their loan spells. The Kumasi-based club are former African champions and are currently going through a great deal of restructuring to return to their former glory days.
Michael Essien's Chelseawoes go on after injuryin pre-season training
Michael Essien has suffered an injury during pre-season training with Chelsea.Michael Essien has suffered a fresh knee injury during Chelsea's pre- season training on Thursday. The midfielder is undergoing tests for the problem in his right leg, and the precise nature and severity of the damage will not become clear until Saturday or Sunday . There are bound to be fears at Chelsea
that the damage could be similar to knee problems suffered by Essien over the past three years. He sustained an anterior cruciate injury to his left knee in September 2008 that ruled him out until the following March and he missed last summer's World Cup after tearing the medial knee ligaments in the same leg during training for the Africa Cup of Nations in January 2010. Chelsea refused to confirm or deny claims by the club's former midfielder Jody Morris on Twitter that Essien had suffered a cruciate injury. A statement said: "Michael Essien suffered an injury to his right knee during training this week. He will undergo tests over the
next few days to determine the extent of that injury. Until we have the full results of those tests we will not be commenting further." Chelsea's first pre-season game is next Saturday when they play Portsmouth in a friendly before leaving for a tour to Asia a few days later.
Whether André Villas-Boas, the new manager, will be able to include the influential Ghanaian in this programme is unclear. Chelsea have appointed Michael Emenalo as technical director, with the 46-year-old Nigerian taking responsibility for Chelsea's scouting, with him stating he will aid Villas-Boas in deciding the club's playing personnel. He told Chelsea's website: "I'm going
to be supporting the manager and
working with him in making sure that things run smoothly. I have the responsibility to direct and manage our scouting structure internationally and domestically, and to keep an eye on and assist the progress of the academy. "Over the next weeks and months I will be getting the scouts in place, finding the people that will lead the scouts along with me, and integrating the agendas and ideas of the different areas from the first team to the academy. We have been gradually reducing the quantity of our scouts and also trying to improve the efficiency of the system.
"The final decisions about who comes in and who doesn't will be the manager's to make but there will be a lot of working together and I would imagine I will be part of that process.
" Branislav Ivanovic, meanwhile, has offered an initial insight into Villas-Boas's methods.
The defender said:
"The first impressions are very good. There has been an interesting dynamic to the first couple of training sessions, and we will have time to get to know him and see what he wants
us players to show him on the pitch. "I think he will give all the players a great opportunity to give their best for the team. Like him, we want to be a better group, a better team.
Individually everyone knows we
have the quality but we have to work as a team and as a group."

Nite Of 1012 Laughs Was A DoubleBlast back
Yet again, the Dome of the
International Conference centre was
filled to capacity with numerous
expectant audience who had come
there with a common goal - to ‘laugh
out loud’ (lol). And indeed, their expectations were
met beyond the limit, to
commensurate their Ghc 50 standard
and Ghc 100 VIP cost per ticket.
Although a major political event, the
ruling party's Delegates Congress, had taken place on the same day and into
night of the ‘Nite of 1012 laughs', it
could not disrupt the laughs but rather
boosted it with jokes being made out
of the results which had come in just
before the show took off. Most of the patrons at this years’ Nite
of 1012 laughs, had their
expectations met with rib cracking
jokes from some of Nigeria’s finest
stand up comedians including Bash,
Owen Gee and the legendary Gordons.
Some Nigerian comedians who were
first timers in Ghana included Emeka
Smith and Elenu who also succeeded
in sending patrons home with tummy
aches they got from excessive laughter.
Ghana’s only ‘swag-on papa’ (Funny
Face) who was the co-MC for the night
was at his best ones again, bursting
onto the stage with a new song he has
recorded with ‘African Girls’ hit maker Castro.
Funny Face, who is also well known
for creating jokes on the spare of the
moment, could not help but put KOD
(Kofi Okyere Darko) –radio presenter
turned ‘tailor’ on the spot, praising and teasing him (KOD) for his (Funny
Face)’ outfit which by the way looked
quite good.
He also did not leave out striker
Asamoah Gyan, when he told him
“you are here laughing, penalty is coming”.
This comment generated a roof
ripping laughter from the audience
since almost every one there could
identify with what Funny Face meant.
The night could not have been complete without a stint of good music
to complement the jokes.
Tunes from sensational Efya seemed
to have come at the right time to relax
the audience who had been laughing
non-stop from the beginning of the programme.
Her hit song ‘little things’ got quite a
number of patrons singing along right
from the beginning to the end of the
song.
Efya later joined Ghana’s fastest rapper Sarkodie to perform ‘I’m in
love with you’, an outstanding
collaboration which many music
lovers have tipped to win ‘Best
Collaboration for the year 2011’ at the
next Ghana Music Awards, but that is certainly contentious and can be
shelved for another day.
The duo looked splendid on stage
because not only did they sing so well
but also showed a lot of emotions
which the song naturally exudes. Sarkodie, after being ‘forgiven’ by
Efya, took the show to another level,
dropping his latest hit song which has
come to be known as ‘azonto',
althouhg the song is originally titled
'You Go Kill me'. At this point, the audience were on
their feet dancing and singing along,
with some of them attempting to do
the ‘azonto’ dance moves.
Legendary Hi-life musician Ben Brako
also spiced up the musical bit of the show with some of his great songs
including ‘Baya’.
The star studded event had a number
of footballers filling the VIP section of
the auditorium.
The likes of Asamoah Gyan and brother Barfuor were seen every now
and then laughing at the several jokes
which kept coming from the main
stage.
Ghana’s John Paintsil, Togolese
international Adebayor and actor John Dumelo came in moments to the
end of the show but also had a few
laughs before the show ended.
At the end, organizers promised a
bigger and better show at the latter
part of the year which would be the ‘Nite of 1013 laughs’ and patrons
cannot wait for that time.
