GHANA'S AZONTO DANCE CRAZE

Azonto has become one dance that has gained worldwide prominence within the shortest timeframe. Throughout the days of Shuperu, Mapuka and Gbeeohe among others, one dance that has the prospects of staying through the years is the Azonto dance - the dance that has flexible moves and is gradually becoming a craze amongst children, parents and the youth especially.

The biggest phenomenon in Ghana in 2011, Azonto, continues to buzz across the country and across the globe via the World Wide Web. With an entry into Wikipedia and millions of views on YouTube, the craze is spreading like wild fire.

The dance involves movement of most of the joints in the body in a rhythmic fashion taking very few steps. Just like most African dances, knee bending and hip movements are essentials to dancing it. Movements in the dance include washing, driving, boxing, making-up, you name them.

The exact origin of the dance is from Greater Accra in areas like Bukom, Chorkor, James Town, and most of the coastal areas in Ghana. However, its popularity, both on the local and international platforms has been propagated by a new wave of entertainment talents emerging in the Greater Accra City.

Arguably the dance was made very popular by Ghanaian football star AsamoahGyan in his goal celebrations for Ghana. Azonto has been further commercialized with its inclusion in music lyrics and music video clips.

Azonto became more popular when young Ghanaian musicians including Castro, R2bees, Stay Jay, Sarkodie, 4X4, among others made songs based on the rhythm of the dance.

Well, interesting enough according to experienced Azonto teachers, when taught effectively, Azonto can be learned within five minutes.

The ‘azonto’ dance goes with any song, even gospel, hence the name Christozonto. So you’ll have no excuse not celebrating the Christmas to the fullest because in any case, azonto tutorials are even on the internet, where u can try your hands on.

Samuel Eto'o Launches His Own Mobile Network

Samuel Eto’o, the world most paid footballer, has launched his own mobile phone network, Set’Mobile in Cameroon.

Set’Mobile becomes the third mobile network after Orange and MTN.The Mobile network was launched in the presence of the Indomitable Lions captain.

Set’Mobile, which bears the initials of the player’s name, Samuel Eto’o, hopes to be a major Player in the mobile telecom sector. The ceremony pulled a cross-section of business personalities and regulators, also attracted fans. It also hopes to impact on the socio-economic development of the country.


With a capital base of 100 million CFA, the company has a general manager and associate partner Charles Gueret, who hopes to make the company very accessible to the population and make an impact in the market. The general manager said Set’Mobile will drop the cost of calls, while offering services such as calls, sms and internet.


It would be recalled that before launching his own network, Eto’o had been the ambassador of one of the mobile operators, Orange. It is believed that considering the player’s popularity in the country, Set’Mobile will pull customers to itself especially youths.

Toure Crowned African Player of the Year 2011

Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure has been crowned the African Player of the Year 2011 at a colourful ceremony in Accra, Ghana. The 28-year old pipped Ghanaian midfielder Andre Ayew and Malian Seydou Keita to scoop the topmost honour at the Awards Gala on Thursday at the Banquet Hall, State House in Accra.

The hardworking midfielder, who plays for English side Manchester City gained the highest votes in the poll decided by votes from the Head Coaches or Technical Directors of the National Associations affiliated to CAF.

The honour caps a wonderful year for the midfield maestro who has been in scintillating form for club and country. Toure is winning the topmost individual honour in African football for the first time and he joins compatriot Didier Drogba as the only Ivorians to have laid claim to the award since its inception in 1992. The coronation of the midfielder was the climax of the ceremony attended by the crème de la crème of African footballers, officials and administrators. Ghana's Vice President John Dramani Mahama graced the event just as CAF President Issa Hayatou and members of the CAF Executive Commitee.

The African Player of the Year (based in Africa) award went to Tunisian midfielder Oussama Darragi. The Esperance captain beat his teammate Yaya Banana of Cameroon and compatriot Zouheir Dhaouadi of Club African to the prize. Super Falcons captain Perpetua Nkwocha was adjudged Women's Footballer of the Year for an unprecedented fourth time. The 35-year old Nigerian had previously won the award in 2004, 2005 and 2010. It was triple delight for Cote d'Ivoire after teenage striker Souleymane Coulibaly was named Most Promising Talent of the Year and Noumandiez Doue as Referee of the Year.


Niger coach Harouna Doula picked the prize for best coach whilst Africa Cup of Nations debutants Botswana saw their efforts in the qualifying series being rewarded with National Team of the Year gong. The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon were also named Women's National Team of the Year. CAF Champions League winners' Esperance Sportive de Tunis was adjudged Club of the Year whilst Libya grabbed the Fair Play award. Former internationals Mustapha Hadji of Morocco and Austin 'Jay-Jay'Okocha of Nigeria were presented with Legends Awards in recognition of their contribution to the development of the game over the years. The ceremony sponsored by telecommunications giants, Globacom left the guests in awe with its rich display of culture, acrobatics and musical performance.


There were also musical performances from Ghanaian hi-life sensation Kwabena Kwabena and young songstress, Efya, both from Ghana. Beninois Zeynab also added some colour to the event just as South Africa duo Gloria Bosman and Loyiso Bala and Kenyan acrobatic tumbling group, 'Troop Agile'. This is the third time the award was being staged in Ghana after 2006 and 2009.

Tiffany’s leaked photo: Is she to blame?

It seems that being a celebrity sometimes comes at a price, and Tiffany unfortunately paid for it when nude pictures of her topless were leaked on the internet last week.

The female rapper who’s had popular hits with ‘Fake London Boy’ and ‘Last One’ reportedly had her house robbed, where many personal items were stolen, including her mobile phone. After failing to exhort money from the rapper through blackmail upon discovering nude pictures on her blackberry, the perpetrator then leaked a picture of Tiffany topless on various social networks. The perpetrator has threatened to leak more pictures if his demands are not met.

As a fan of Tiffany I really felt for her when I heard the story, as something like this has the potential of really damaging her musical career when she’s doing so well at the moment. Tiffany has since apologized to fans on Facebook for the incident. Which brings me to the question: why did she even have those pictures on her phone? As unfair as it seems, sometimes having a career in the public eye means you have no private life.

Everything you do is scrutinized and things you don’t want people knowing about you are made public knowledge. Knowing this shouldn’t someone in the public eye take precautions to prevent things like that from happening?

However as someone in the public eye, having nude pictures of yourself on your phone is something you need to seriously think twice about. My problem is not why Tiffany took those nude pictures of herself but rather why she left the images on her phone. I feel that perhaps Tiffany should have realized the risk factor involved in carrying such pictures of herself around. People around you can easily access your phone, and when not careful you expose personal information and in Tiffany’s case images of yourself when you lose or have your phone stolen. As harsh it may sound, she could have prevented this from happening.

With the guy in question now threatening to release more nude pictures, I bet she’s wishing she’d never had those pictures on her phone. I really hope they catch the guy responsible for this before he leaks more nude pictures of her on the internet. It would be a shame to see her career badly affected because of this.

Afrobeats: Ghanaian’s Atumpan & Stay Jay

Atumpan is back with a hot new track called ‘Sisimuden’. This time ‘the teacher’, who brought us the massive hit ‘The Thing’ has teamed up with shashee wowo rapper Stay Jay. Atumpan, who has described himself as an ‘underground dancehallist’ does not disappoint on this track. ‘Sisimuden’ is definitely something to write home about and a great follow up single to the highly popular ‘The Thing’. Having just released his album ‘The Talking Drum’, this will be the second single off the 15 track album.

Gerry Partington crowned Miss Malaika 2011

After 13 weeks of arduous tasks in the Miss Malaika Competition, 22-year-old Gerry Partington has been crowned Miss Malaika 2011.

The undergraduate from the University of Ghana faced stiff competition from nine other pretty and intelligent ladies who all showed potential to wear the crown.

The winner was rather under controversial circumstances as majority of the audience thought the crown should have gone to Alexander who espoused brains with beauty.

For the first time in many years there was a tie between two ladies - Gerry and Alex - which sparked a lot of boos when the announcement was made.

To break the tie the two ladies had to answer the deciding question and yet again Alex was quite phenomenal with her answer.

Someway somehow the judges managed to name Gerry winner of the pageant which left a sour taste in the mouth of many.

This is the second year in a row that the declaration of the winner of the Miss Malaika pageant has been shrouded in controversy.

So as it stands Gerry is Miss Malaika 2011, Alexander, first runner-up and Deborah (Smallie) second runner-up.

For her prize, Gerry takes home a KIA saloon car, GH¢ 6,000, wax prints from ATL, a trip to South Africa amongst others.

Emmanuella won the Ms. Talent session and Magdalene was named Ms Congeniality.

One thing the show would definitely be remembered for is the entertainment bit where Ghana’s fastest rapper Sarkodie tore the stage apart with ‘U go kill me’ and his collaboration with Efya ‘I’m in love with you now’.

Funny Face helped him out with the 'azonto dance'.

Other entertainers for the night were R2Bees who got almost everybody screaming ‘Agyeiii’, their latest single.

Stay J and Dr. Sid from Nigeria also played their part in entertaining the audience.
