Tamale NPP accuses police of selective justice.

Secretary to the Tamale central constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Musah Mutawakil has accused the northern regional police command of selectively arresting the party’s supporters in the wake of recent hostilities in the area.

According to Musah Mutawakil, recent operations carried by the police in Tamale in-connection with recent killings there have exposed what he described as the apparent bias of the police in dispensing justice.

He has therefore served notice of mobilizing NPP supporters in the area to go on a demonstration if such practice continues.

Musah Mutawakil also challenged the police to fast track the arrest of the perpetrators of the shooting incident in Tamale which resulted in the injury of nine NPP supporters.

Attempts to get a reaction from the northern regional police command proved futile.

Below is the full statement;

We wish to express our serious concern over the seeming selective amnesia that the police service in Tamale has adopted in the maintenance of law and order.

Recent activities of the police in Tamale have exposed apparent bias on the part of the police in dispensing justice. On the 08 of April, 2014, Alhassan Naziru was shot 9 times at Sagnarigu.

A formal report was lodged with the police with the names of the suspects. He passed-on on the 10th of April; 2014.

The inactivity of the police on the report of the shooting and the subsequent death of Alhassan Naziru led to the disturbances in Tamale on 10 April, 2014 which also caused the death of Mohammed Abdul-Rashid at the Timber market, Tamale.

Since then, supporters of NPP in Aboaboo have been living with terror and insecurity from supporters of NDC and the police.

Three strong members of the NPP from Aboaboo have been arrested over the death of Mohammed Abdul-Rashid. Sadly, not a single suspect of the Sagnarigu killing of Alhassan Naziru has yet been arrested even with the provision of names of the suspects that was given out by Mohammed Naziru on his hospital bed to the police.

The Tamale central constituency assistant secretary for the NPP was almost lynched at radio justice, a private radio station which was vandalized and burnt, when he was invited for a news paper review program at the station. It took a combined team of police and military to bring the violent situation under control and yet no arrest was made.

Just on the eve of the National delegates’ conference in Tamale, nine (9) supporters of the NPP were shot in a Hollywood drive by shoot style at Aboaboo, most of whom are still on admission at the Tamale teaching hospital. A formal report was again lodged with the police with the names of the suspects. To date no arrest is made by the police

These developments re-emphases the suspicion of the manipulation of the security agencies especially the police by the ruling party The police must be seen to be dispensing justice for all regardless of one’s political affiliation to consolidate the waning trust the general public have in them(Police).

We are therefore calling on the police, to as a matter of urgency, arrest the named suspects and put them before the laws of the land to avert a reprisal situation.

We believe in the rule of law and order and will do anything to maintain a society of law and order. We wish to state emphatically that if after a week, there is still no arrest by the police, we will embark on continues lawful demonstrations in the Tamale Metropolis until we see justice. We cannot be treated as second class citizens by virtue of the fact our political party is not in government.
