Is Ghana in a much better shape today than under Ndc?

Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, says the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has proven beyond reasonable doubt that it is a better manager of the economy.

According to him, the country, in spite of the seeming economic challenges, is in a better shape than it was under the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Kwakye Ofosu in an apparent response to claims that government is introducing new taxes to shore-up its revenue in view of the precarious nature of the state coffers, maintained that the taxes are being put to good use.

The NPP has questioned the basis for the increase in taxes, since according to them, there is nothing to show for it. The opposition party wondered why a social democratic party like the NDC would rather exacerbate the plight of Ghanaians after it had promised them 'a Better Ghana'.

The NPP also attributes the unbridled hardship in the country to fiscal indiscipline on the part of government, which it says has weakened the economic fundamentals of the country.

But on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Tuesday, Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the NPP has no moral right to lecture government about the economy.

He indicated that the NPP’s economic performance during its eight years in power is nothing to be proud of.

The Deputy Information Minister noted that Ghana, just like any other country in the world, is not immune from the economic volatility, so therefore, government cannot be blamed for the current economic woes.

This, notwithstanding, Kwakye Ofosu said government is making progress to restore the economy back to its vibrant state.

He intimated that the Mahama-led administration does not just boast of superior performance in the area of macro-economic management, but has also made giant strides in other sectors of the economy.

Citing the construction of roads, school blocks and hospitals as some of the things taxes are used for, the Deputy Information Minister stressed that, “we are investing in the future of our children”.

Additionally, Felix Kwakye Ofosu noted that government is not perturbed by the NPP’s propaganda, but will forge ahead to fulfill its 'Better Ghana Agenda' promise to Ghanaians.

In a rebuttal, former NPP Member of Parliament for Okaikoi South, Nana Akomea, said the untold hardship in the country as indicated by his party is not a figment of their imagination.

He could not fathom why a government which has about “two billion” oil revenue at its disposal has not been able to do anything substantial to benefit the citizenry.

“This NDC government is the worst form of government; all it does is to introduce killer taxes,” he bemoaned.

Nana Akomea urged government to quit its propaganda activities and focus on governance to save Ghanaians from abject poverty.
