Nigerian Ruling Party Splits, Could it Lead To More Violence??

The break-up of the Nigerian ruling party is big news. The People Democratic Party has ruled for 15 straight year and some analysts say that Nigeria has turned into a one party state threatening its democracy. Al-Jazeera reported that the split was caused by the current president’s, Goodluck Jonathan, push to run for office in 2015, which many of the party officials are against.

Nigeria has come under intense attack from Islamic militants, Boko Haram, in recent month pushing the US to declare it a terrorist group. If Jonathan decided to run there are fears that it could lead to more sectarian violence since the Christians from the south have dominated power. The defections from the ruling party also reduces his chances of being re-elected.

“There is a new hope among Nigerian and entire Africa. There is an opportunity now to rescue Nigeria from Imperialism … transparency in the election process has been absent in this country,” said Bola Tinubu, leader of the opposition party.

“This party has refused to obey even its own rules. It has refused to comply with its own processes,” said Clement Nwankwo, a political analyst.
