Duncan-Williams - 2011 will be year of unstoppable favour

Archbishop Duncan Williams says he strongly believes that “2011 will be a year of
unstoppable favour” for Ghanaians.

Speaking to Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah on the Super Morning Show, the Archbishop of Christian Action Faith Ministries (CAFM) said he had the strongest conviction that his prophesy will come to pass because according to him, Joseph was the 11th child of Jacob in the Bible and despite the challenges he encountered, he went on to become Egypt’s prime minister.

He said Joseph’s situation can be likened to the plight of many Ghanaians and thus believes that the number 11 elicits divinity.

He called on Ghanaians to believe strongly in God and accept that God’s version of time, Kairos, is the means by which God operates and thus, blessings may not come as speedily as one may want them.

He distinguished the difference between Kairos and Chronos, indicating that Chronos is the time measurement used on earth but Kairos is a divine measurement of time, thereby, hinting that Ghanaians should be patient to see divine blessings manifest in their lives.

He cited Jesus Christ and other great men of God who had been prophesied of years and millennia before their births, yet, their destinies were exactly what were prophesied.

Archbishop Duncan Williams said because we are mortal beings on earth, we tend to forget that God’s ways are purely divine and not according to nature’s laws.

Arch Bishop Duncan Williams further said that this year’s watch night dubbed Kairos Night, which is being organized by CAFM will be hosted at the El-Wak Sports Stadium because, according to him, the previous edition had thousands of crowds spilling from the church into the streets and they would want to prevent a repeat.

He indicated that security will be heightened at the venue and a large parking space made available to ensure a problem-free Kairos Night.

Ghanaians Abroad, Please Come Home

President John Evans Atta Mills on Friday appealed to Ghanaian medical professionals abroad to consider the sacrifices the nation made in traini

ng them and come back home to render their due to their countrymen.

He extended the nation’s appreciation to those serving at home and assured them of the necessary government support to effectively discharge their duties, adding that qualitative medical care was one of the priorities of government.

President Mills made the appeal when a delegation from the Foundation of Orthopaedic and Complex Spine, a non profit making medical group, led by its founder, Prof Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle. The organization, which has been operating in Ghana for more than 10 years, is into the treatment of disability, trauma, injury, malformation, arthritis and problems of the spine.

President Mills underscored the need for a healthy people for sustainable development and observed as quite refreshing the sacrifices of the group.

He commended the leader as well as other Ghanaian medics who had returned home to offer their services.President Mills urged the doctors to go beyond the financial motive and return home to work in appreciation of the sacrifice of the many Ghanaians who broke their backs to see the medical professionals through school.

He said they should resolve to put their expertise at the disposal of the weak at home. The President appealed to medical professionals such as those in orthopaedics to give off their best so that physical impairment and defects could be treated at an early age.

The Foundation has so far attracted 250 medical volunteers from the United States of America and from around the world. It has treated and performed surgeries on about 600 people who are mostly Ghanaians with the others from Europe. It has so far reviewed about 17,000 patients and facilitated medical training to those from abroad to handle local cases.

According to Prof Oheneba- Boachie, there were 15 qualified orthopaedic surgeons in Ghana against 29,000 in the US. He described the disparity as wide, and said the Foundation was trying to close the gap through capacity building and infrastructural development” to provide a Centre of Excellence for orthopaedic training in Africa.”

Prof Oheneba-Boachie said about 60,000 people of the world did not have adequate access to orthopaedic service and appealed to government for the grant of tax relief for imported equipment for the Foundation.

Dr Michael Mendelow, a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon announced that the Foundation was teaming up with the US based Cure International to treat club-foot that affected about one in 2,000 new births in Ghana.

Asamoah Gyan is BBC African footballer of the year

Ghana and Sunderland star Asamoah Gyan has been crowned BBC African Footballer of the Year for 2010.

The Black Stars striker clinched the title with an overwhelming majority - receiving more than half of the vote.

He finished well ahead of fellow Ghanaian Andre 'Dede' Ayew, Ivorians Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o of Cameroon.

"I'm so happy, I can't believe it," he said. "I'm so thankful to all the fans who voted for me."

He added: "It was really hard to win this award, especially because of all the other players I was up against.

"So I'm so appreciative to all my fans in Africa - especially my family and fans in Ghana."

Gyan had a memorable year internationally, leading Ghana to second place at the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, scoring three of the four goals that helped Ghana reach their first final in 18 years.

At the World Cup in South Africa, the 24-year-old grabbed the world's attention as his three goals helped the Black Stars progress from the group and into the quarter-finals.

But he shot to prominence through unfortunate circumstances as his missed penalty against Uruguay with the last kick of the game denied Africa its first semi-final berth.

He then earned widespread praise and went some way to redeeming his error when recovered his composure to score in the shoot-out following a 1-1 draw.

Despite the disappointment of the World Cup exit, the finals boosted his career as he left French side Rennes to become Sunderland's record signing at £13m.

"Asamoah has been a fantastic addition to the Sunderland squad," said Sunderland coach Steve Bruce, who presented Gyan with the African Footballer of the Year trophy.

"As our record signing, he had a lot of expectation placed on his shoulders but he has embraced the club wholeheartedly and has settled in very well.

"He's a strong, quick player and brings something different to the side.

"He has formed positive partnerships with other strikers and he's a real bright spark around the place too - always smiling and happy.

"He has an infectious joy for football, and we are reaping the rewards of that.

"I'm thrilled for Asamoah that he has been awarded this honour, it is thoroughly deserved."

The search for BBC African Footballer of the Year 2010 began on 15 November when fans were given a chance to choose their African football hero from a shortlist selected by experts from each of the continent's 52 countries.

Public voting closed on 10 December 2010 - with votes cast online at bbc.com/africanfootball or via text messages.

Prove I'm a cocaine addict or shut up - Nana dares critics

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party for the 2012 elections, has dared his critics to prove with empirical evidence that he is a drug addict or “shut up” and stop attacking his personality.

For the first time, the NPP flagbearer is making a public pronouncement on what he describes as a smear campaign against his personality.

“I have never tasted or sniffed cocaine. Why are my detractors attacking my personality, saying that I am a drug addict?” Nana Addo fumed.

Nana Addo vowed not to tolerate any further attacks on his personality and threatened to deal decisively with persons who continue to peddle falsehood against him as a drug addict.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of a three day national NPP youth conference held at the Mafara Hotel in Tamale.

Giving a brief history and ideology of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, Nana Addo encouraged all NPP loyalists to improve the party’s internal harmony by doing away with factionalism.

He said the contest for leadership positions in the NPP was over for which reason factionalism should be discarded by all party members.

The NPP 2012 flag bearer stated emphatically that no body or group of persons within the NPP will be allowed to place his/their preference above the collective interest of the party for elections 2012.

He reassured Ghanaians of free secondary education under his leadership and expressed the hope that he will win the 2012 elections.

Nana Addo confirmed that part of the factors which caused the NPP’s defeat in 2008 had to do with the choice of Parliamentary candidates, and the party’s success in 2012 will largely depend on how the leadership will manage the upcoming Parliamentary primaries ahead of the next elections.

He underscored the need for party leadership, particularly at the grass root to listen to party supporters in their respective constituencies to get good materials for the Parliamentary contest in 2012.

Other NPP big wigs who attended the workshop included Jake Otanka Obetsebi Lamptey, the National Chairman, Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie alias Sir John, the General Secretary as well Dr. Mahamud Bawumia, NPP 2008 running mate and Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, Executive Director of the Danquah Institute.

It's a "fear and panic budget" - Minority

The Minority in Parliament has described the 2011 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the government presented to the House by the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning yesterday as "wicked", "anti-private sector development" and a "fear and panic" budget.

Even though the usual inscriptions on sheets of paper to convey their sentiments about budgets were absent, interviews with some members of the Minority showed their disapproval of the budget in general and the introduction of taxes in particular.

The Majority, however, debunked assertions by the Minority and explained that the budget would bring hope to Ghanaians after the government had used the past two years to repair the economic mess it inherited.

A former Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning and NPP MP for Old Tafo, Dr Anthony Akoto Osei, said, "The budget is not a good one. There was nothing new, with the exception of the introduction taxes.

He noted that with the introduction of seven different taxes, Ghanaians should expect more difficulties next year than what they experienced this year.

A former Deputy MInister of Finance and Member of Parliament, NPP MP for Wenchi, Professor Yaw Gyan-Baffour, bemoaned the insensitivity of the government, explaining that Ghanaians were already stressed up after going through a lot of difficulties under the NDC's two-year misrule.

The NPP MP for Kwabre East, Mr Kofi Frimmpong, stated that all projects that were mentioned in the budget were initiatives of the Kufuor administration and accused the Mills government of running out of ideas after promising Ghanaians the moon.

Mr Frimpong observed that it was the intention of the government to impose taxes on churches when Dr. Duffuor mentioned that the activities of certain non-governmental organisations would be taxed.

"Why are we trying to put more impediments in the way of the private sector when the government has touted its resolve to make the private sector the engine of growth? Why are we taking away the oil that will lubricate the engine of the private sector to stimulate the kind of growth that we envisage?" he questioned.

The NPP MP for Ayensuano, Mr Samuel Aye-Paye, said there was nothing impressive about the 2011 budget, reiterating the fact that there were no new policies.

He said if the NDC did not have anything new for Ghanaians, then it was unfortunate that Ghanaians gave the party the mandate to rule.

He said it was only when interest rates were lowered that the private sector would be encouraged to borrow from the banks to expand their businesses and create jobs for the youth.

The NPP MP for Okaikoi North, Mrs. Elizaabeth Sackey, said it was unfortunate that after two years in office, the government was still struggling to find its feet.

She said even though prices of gold and cocoa had gone up, those gains had not been used to embark on more projects to benefit the people.

The Minister of Transport and NDC MP for Effutu, Mr Mike Allen Hammah, however, maintained that the budget would bring more hope to Ghanaians, assuring them that the new initiatives would encourage the private sector to do more to increase employment.

He explained that the taxes that had been introduced were well thought-out and would not affect the ordinary people in the country.

He assured Ghanaians that as stated in the budget, the rail lines would be rehabilitated and modernised to ensure easy and affordable transportation in the country.

The NDC MP for Juaboso, Mr. Sampson Ahi, commended the government for working tirelessly to clear the economic mess that was left behind by the NPP administration.

The Majority Chief Whip and NDC MP for Nkwanta South, Mr Geshon Gbediame, said there was no doubt that the NDC government had been able to put the economy on the right path.

He, however, advised that if the government was poised to use the agricultural sector to stimulate growth and provide jobs, then efforts should be made to create a ready market for farm produce to encourage the youth to take to agriculture.

The NDC MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, Mr. Cassiel Ato Forson, argued that now that the economy had been stabilised, the government would be able to implement policies outlined in the 2011 budget in order to create jobs.

The PNC MP for Sissala West, Mr Haruna Bayirga, noted that every government had good intentions for its people and called on the government to rigorously implement policies outlined in the budget to achieve results.

He called for massive improvement in the road sector, stressing that roads in his constituency were not good.

Asamoah Gyan scores, as Sunderland humiliates Chelsea

Asamoah Gyan training with Stade Rennais F.C. ...Image via Wikipedia

Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan continued his fine scoring form for Sunderland with a neat finish in the second half to hand Chelsea a 3-0 drubbing at Stamford Bridge- the highest defeat for the league leaders thus far.

Gyan was played through with an immaculate pass from Henderson and with just Cech to beat, the Ghanaian with the inside of his foot slotted the ball past the Chelsea shot stopper.

The visitors had their noses in front in the first half with a superb solo effort by Nedum Onuoha who squeezed past three Chelsea defence men before beating Cech.

Even though Onuoha will be credited for his enterprise and dexterity it was the Ghanaian whose goal bound shot was saved with a finger-tip, coupled with yet another instinctive rebound save by Cech.

He could not for the third time in a split second prevent Onuoha from scoring.

Before that though, Cech had brushed away a teasing curl, and a stupendous header both from man-of-the-match, Dan Welbeck in what should have been the visitors opener.

Danny Welbeck was gifted a silly late goal by Ashley Cole to crown a fantastic day for the Black Cats and a woeful performance by the league leaders.

Chelsea were completely out of sorts and created no clear goal scoring opportunity, a far cry from a side which has scored more than 20 goals this season.

The Sunderland defence marshaled around Bramble was rugged and aggressive giving Drogba and Anelka no breather at all. The best Chelsea had were a number of free-kicks from near post which Drogba missed.

With the absence of Alex and Terry, the Chelsea defence leaked badly and should even be content with the score-line. It could have been embarrassing, if it was not already.

Polytechnic students ponder next line of action

Accra, Nov. 10, GNA - Mr Boye Nii Lantey Williams, SRC President of Accra Polytechnic, on Wednesday denied rumours circulating in the media that polytechnic students across the country had converged at the premises of Accra Polytechnic for a demonstration. He said the event was rather a meeting that the SRC executives from all the 10 polytechnics in the country were to have had with the Minister of Education on issues affecting polytechnic education. "However, I received a call from our Research and Education Officer informing me about the cancellation of the meeting at the last minute. Reasons for the cancellation of the meeting are still not known to me," he told the GNA in an interview.

He said the executives would now converge in Accra on Friday, November 12, for the Accra High Court verdict on the Labour Commission's suit on the strike action by Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG).

"When we all meet here on Friday, we would then decide on the next line of action that we are going to take," he said. He described as "very worrisome" the reasons why government would allow polytechnics to experience about 10 weeks of strike action in just one semester.

He said on September 1, our lecturers embarked on a strike action that lasted about four weeks before returning to the lecture halls. "The one we are experiencing now started just two weeks after they returned to the lecture halls because government failed to fulfill its part of the bargain," he explained. Mr Williams expressed disappointment about the government's "lackadaisical attitude", "lack of concern for Polytechnic education" and its "unwillingness to solve the impasse", even after about 5,000 polytechnic students had embarked on demonstration in Accra. He also expressed concern about the Diploma in Business Studies students who write foreign exams with fixed dates and thereby need continuous tuition to prepare them adequately for their papers. Mr Williams said students were wasting money on expensive hostel accommodation when no classes were going. A visit by the GNA to Accra Polytechnic saw the campus almost deserted with only a few students loitering around with some playing games. 10 Nov. 10

Did you see anything in NPP's eight years'? - Mills asks

In what appears to be a response to the incessant calls and pressure on his two years old Government to deliver on its promises, President Mills has questioned Ghanaians what they saw in the eight years regime of the New Patriotic Party.

The President, who was addressing the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Upper East Region on Saturday November 6, said unlike the previous administration, the NDC will ensure that Ghanaians “see something”.

Speaking about the commercial drilling of oil which is slated to commence in early December 2010, President Mills cautioned Ghanaians to manage their expectations since it will take some time for the oil revenue to accumulate for the necessary development projects.

“In a few weeks, our first oil will come out. But let me set the records straight. At the beginning, the oil will come in bits and things are not going to materialize overnight. I know that the expectations are high and there are people who think that come November or December, Ghana will be awashed with oil resources. My brothers and sisters, this is not the case. We have to go gingerly. It will take us sometime to be able to get the oil revenue which we are going to use in the productive sectors of the economy” he assured.

“We came to meet an economy that was not strong and had difficulties. And a lot of people have complained over the past two years, we are not seeing anything. I ask them, did they see anything in the previous eight years?

We are determined that you should see something but we would have to remove all the bottlenecks and the burden that we inherited. Thank God we are making headway. But we would not want to deceive you. Judging from the work that we have done from the resources that have been given to us, I know that we would be able to make a difference” he said.

The President said his administration will make good use of the commitments made by international partners such as China and Japan to pump adequate resources into the Ghanaian economy.

Citing recent concerns of growing insecurity following reports of an alleged mass rape and robbery incident in a Tamale-bound bus, President Mills vowed not to allow instability to derail the proper use of such resources in developing the nation.

“I Atta Mills will not sit down and allow a situation that is going to retard the progress that we are going to make as a nation” he said.

Professor Mills appealed for unity to move the country forward and deliver her people from the shackles of poverty.

Blaming the Kufuor administration for the woes of the Tema Oil Refinery, President Mills expressed concern about reports that some unscrupulous persons were smuggling petroleum products out of the country.

“It has also come to my knowledge that in certain parts of the country including the Upper East, petroleum products are being smuggled out of the country. This practice is imposing a severe burden on the Tema Oil Refinery which is already saddled with debts that were bequeathed to us by the previous administration which we are grappling to be able to settle.

The TOR debt is not an easy thing to resolve and I will appeal to our compatriots that together we have to think of how we can remove this debt and give TOR the freedom and the ability to be able to stand on its feet and meet our demands”

Police kills five armed robbers in shoot-out

Accra, Nov. 5, GNA - The Ghana Police Service, on Friday shot five armed robbers dead who were on a mission to rob a house at Adjiriganor in East Legon.

Deputy Commissioner Of Police (DCOP) Rose Bio-Atinga, Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, who made this known at a press conference in Accra, said the police cordoned off the area following a tip off from the public.

DCOP Bio-Atinga said at about 1000 hours, six armed robbers entered the house and ordered every one to lie down while firing warning shoots. The Regional Commander said the police rushed to the scene and exchanged fire with the robbers.

DCOP Bio-Atinga said three of the robbers were shot dead instantly while three escaped and took cover in a nearby kiosk.

She said the owner of the kiosk who attempted to resist the armed robbers was shot dead and the body had since been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary.

DCOP Bio-Atinga, said the police received reinforcement and pursue the robbers to their hideout, leading to the killing of two others while one was arrested and is currently in police custody.

She said incidentally the house was robbed twice last year and urged the public to be alert and report suspected case of armed robbery to the police.

The Regional Commander said the police are up to the task and would do anything possible to protect lives and property.

Ex- Prez KUFFOUR Clears The Air...

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has categorically indicated that Dr. Kwame Bawuah-Edusei, one of the two partners of the EO Group which has a stake in the Jubilee Oil Field, WAS NOT the Chairman, and HAD NEVER BEEN the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in North America or elsewhere.

This is contained in a letter dated November 3, 2010, and signed by Mr. Kwadwo Mpiani, former Chief of Staff in the erstwhile NPP administration, following a statement the former Head of State made in a recent interview with the UK-based Financial Times (FT).

In the course of the interview, former President Kufuor was reported to have stated that Dr. Bawuah-Edusei was the Chairman of the North American branch of the New Patriotic Party at the time the EO Group attracted Kosmos Energy into oil exploration in Ghana.

Retracting the above statement, Kufuor maintained in the letter – addressed to the editor of the FT, and which The New Weekend Crusading Guide chanced upon – “THE TRUE POSITION IS THAT DR. EDUSEI WAS NOT THE CHAIRMAN AND HAS NEVER BEEN A CHAIRMAN OF THE PARTY IN NORTH AMERICA OR ANYWHERE ELSE.”

According to official file of the North American branch of the NPP, Bawuah-Edusei had never been the Chairman of that branch.

Available records to this paper show that the party’s chairmen of the North American branch since it was formed in 1922 are:

Mr. Boakye Agyarko; 1992 – 1998

Mr. Charles Amoamah; 1998 – 2001

Mr. Philip Tawiah; 2001 – 2003

Mr. Mohammed Idris; 2003 – 2007

Mr. Kofi Boateng; 2007 – 2009

Mr. Kwaku Agyei Yeboah; 2009 – to date

Readers will recall that Dr. Bawuah-Edusei and his partner, Mr. Owusu, jointly formed the EO Group in August 2002, and initially brought Ennex International PIC – an Irish company – to Ghana in November 2002 for exploration purposes. The EO Group and Ennex agreed to form a joint venture to acquire the West Cape Three Points (WCTP) block.

The EO Group was slated to have 15% interest while Ennex was to take 85%, and would bear all of the costs of the EO Group.

By April 2003 the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Ennex, EO Group and the Ministry of Energy had completed negotiations for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), setting out all the key commercial terms and conditions of a Petroleum Agreement. The Ministry and the GNPC signed the MoU, subject to Ennex demonstrating financial capability and committing to the minimum work programme.

However, by late 2003, it had become apparent that Ennex was not willing to bear the financial commitment of the minimum work obligation, and so a substitute had to be sought.

With the collapse of the Ennex connection, Dr. Edusei and Mr. Owusu went around in search of oil companies to come to Ghana, but since the companies the EO Group contacted did not show any interest in the oil exploration, the Group turned to Dallas in the US where the Kosmos connection materialized.
